Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, was released from prison on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. She had been sentenced to three years in prison in November 2021, but her sentence was reduced for good behavior.

Coronel Aispuro pleaded guilty to three federal offenses in June 2021: conspiracy to distribute cocaine, conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, and money laundering conspiracy. She admitted to helping her husband run his drug empire and to knowing about his plans to escape from prison.

Coronel Aispuro was born in California in 1989. She met Guzman when she was 17 years old and they married in 2007. They have twin daughters together.

Guzman was arrested in Mexico in 2014 and extradited to the United States in 2017. He was found guilty of drug trafficking and money laundering in 2019 and sentenced to life in prison.

Coronel Aispuro was arrested in the United States in February 2021. She was accused of helping her husband plan his escape from prison in 2015.

Coronel Aispuro's release comes at a time when the Sinaloa cartel is facing increasing pressure from law enforcement. The cartel has been weakened by the arrests of several of its top leaders, including Guzman.

It is unclear what Coronel Aispuro will do now that she is out of prison. She has said that she wants to focus on raising her daughters.
